Long story short, Kestral destroyed by boss with 1HP, literally 3 seconds before all my lasers charged.
Just wow.
FYI Upgrades: Full shields, engines, weapons [Hermes, Burst II, Hull II, Heavy II]
*sigh*
On a positive note, already beaten it twice.

In those cases, I like to imagine the explosion and debris kills it posthumously.

People have failed by narrow margins than that. I've seen two different screenshots of someone getting a game over screen while the boss is exploding in the background (thanks to the travel time on weapons and near simultaneous firing.)

I feel for you, I got killed by a 2hp final boss.
"Meh, half hull should be enough. I'll just kill him now."
