U will be surprised how good a 3d rendered top-view graphic from a ship can be, and it doesnt matter that ftl its 2d, i modded for a lot 2d games and i used sketchup almost all of the time to make top-views. The difference on quality is just tremendous. People prefers to see a good looking ship, even if it doesnt fit at 100% with the 2d theme of the game, than a flat low quality graphic..

Besides, u dont need to use a render program for modding for FTL, with the export 2d graphic option on sketchup, the final results are even better, cuz the final graphic will look more the style of FTL. U can even make the black borders stronger, if u feel its not ftl style enough seriously never thought of that, now that i discovered it (loong time not using sketchup) i really have a lot of ideas in my mind. For example, this tooks me about 25-30 minutes to finish using sketchup -> it is a hirogen fighter that i modeled long time ago (and that i plan to use as a drone). And the final image is taken from the sketchup itself, of course this is a fast captured top-view, u will need to refine a bit how u cut the graphic to improve the edges detection and other things that u will usually do with gimp as well.

I didnt add any shadows as well, i forgot but u can of course use shadows in the capture, it was time ago since i didnt use sketchup and i forgot about the shadows xD.

As u see, the quality is far better than using only gimp (its really harder to achieve a good looking ship with gimp than sketchup, with su is really really easy). And even if u are a pro with gimp u will waste a lot more time than in sketchup.

version 1.5:

-> added ship: Gamma Destroyer
-> added new weapon: Shock Laser Beta
-> Both Shock Lasers are now available at the store.
-> Added new drone: Gamma Destroyer (for the Gamma Destroyer only)

I encourage u to do so. But, be aware, in the beginning u will need time to learn the basics of sketchup (but it is easy to learn, so maybe it will not take u more than 1 or maybe 2 days).After that, its probably that u will want some interesting plugins (for modeling complex shapes, tubes, etc i mean u can do that with sketchup but there are plugins that simplifies that even more lol) and of course, texture sources to texture your model. Overall, great mod, i like the weapons, the boarding terminator is a little op for my test, but i had luck as well and before the second sector i already have engines at level 6 and pilot at level 3. I was evading more than 50%. Only in the sector 1--

Anyways, good job, but the ship graphic is the thing is making me to not enjoy enough of this mod.. :)

-> figured that the Delta cruiser is to difficult. It starts now with shields system, but only 1 powerbar (100 scrap upgrade)
-> fixed the ionbeam firing point.

-> added the Alpha scout
-> changed Shock laser B to 2 power

Found a bug with the Alpha scout:

If you turn of the repair drone while its within the gap, the game crashes. That's bad and all, but nothing I can fix, since that's a problem of the movement AI of the drones, which I cant change.

So my advise to all: Dont turn off the Drones while they are in the gap between the rooms.

Funny thing I noticed with the gap:

If you send a slug crewmember through it shows itself as a red dot, so you can actually see how he walks. Kinda funny.
